Drain cleaning and sewer line repair in Murfreesboro

A drain that runs slow is telling you something. Sometimes it is hair and soap in a single trap. Sometimes it is a bellied section of old pipe, or roots working into a joint, and the clog keeps coming back no matter how many times it gets cleared. We work out which one you have before we recommend anything.

Murfreesboro has houses with drain lines made from modern PVC, and others built before that when clay and cast iron were the standard.

Signs the problem is bigger than one drain

  • More than one fixture is slow at the same time
  • A toilet gurgles when the washing machine drains
  • Water shows up in the lowest tub or floor drain
  • A sewage smell inside the house or in the yard
  • The same clog returns a few weeks after it was cleared

Old pipe, new problems

In some of the older parts of town, the line from the house to the street can be clay tile or cast iron. Clay is made in short sections, and every joint is a place a root can get in. Cast iron rusts from the inside and gets rough, which catches paper and grease.

Newer homes mostly have PVC, which is smooth and tight, but those lines have their own failures: a sag where the trench settled, or a joint that was never fully seated. If the line has a sag, water pools and the clog keeps forming at the low spot.

Low ground and old lines

Lytle Creek runs through downtown, and the West Fork of the Stones River winds through town with the greenway beside it. Houses in lower areas can see slow drains after heavy rain, because older lines take on groundwater through cracked joints and the system downstream runs full. If your drains misbehave mainly during storms, tell us when you call. It points toward the pipe and away from the fixture.

More drain questions

Where is my cleanout?

Usually a capped pipe in the yard near the foundation or in the crawlspace. If you cannot find it, we will. Knowing where it is makes any future clog cheaper to clear.

Is it normal for a toilet to gurgle?

An occasional gurgle can be a venting quirk. Gurgling together with slow drains elsewhere points to the main line.

What we do

  1. Find where it stops

We work out whether the blockage is in the fixture, the branch line, or the main.

  2. Clear it properly

The goal is water that moves freely again, and a fix that lasts longer than the weekend.

  3. Tell you what caused it

If the pipe is damaged or sagging, we explain the repair options and what each costs.

A note on septic and city sewer

Most homes inside Murfreesboro are on city sewer. If you are out in the county and on a septic system, we can handle the house side of the plumbing, but pumping and servicing the tank itself is a separate trade.

Drain questions

Are chemical drain cleaners safe?

We would skip them. They can damage older pipes and fittings and make the next person who works on the drain deal with caustic water.

Can you fix a collapsed or broken sewer line?

Yes, we repair and replace underground drain and sewer lines. If you need a related install, see remodel and new build plumbing in Murfreesboro.

The washing machine drain nobody thinks about

A standpipe behind the washer handles a lot of water in a short burst, and it carries lint, hair and fabric softener residue out with it. In older rental houses near MTSU, where the machine may run constantly, the standpipe and the line behind it can narrow until the box overflows halfway through a load. A washer that backs up out of the wall is a drain problem, not a washer problem, and no amount of new hoses will fix it.

If yours overflows, stop using it and call. Clearing the line takes a short visit, and we can also check that the standpipe is the right height and has a trap, both of which affect how the whole thing behaves.
