Fixture installation in Eagleville

Out here a good fixture is only half of what matters. The other half is the water behind it, and whether the hose bib will survive a freeze. We install fixtures indoors and out, and we pay attention to what is under the cabinet and on the other side of the wall.

Outdoor spigots

A standard spigot has a valve at the outside end, and if there is water in the pipe when it freezes, the pipe can split inside the wall. A frost-free spigot puts the valve deep inside the warm side of the wall. If you have lost a hose bib to a freeze, replacing it with a frost-free one is a small job that can prevent a big leak.

What we install

  • Faucets and sinks
  • Toilets
  • Garbage disposals
  • Washing machine boxes
  • Frost-free spigots and hose bibs
  • Utility sinks in garages and barns

Fixtures in utility spaces

Barns, shops and detached garages usually get a utility sink, a hose bib and occasionally a half bath. These are cheap jobs if the water and drain are close, and larger ones if they are not. A utility sink in a heated shop is a different thing from one in an unheated barn, and the latter needs freeze protection.

Winter proofing

  • Drain the line to an unheated building before the first hard freeze
  • Use frost-free spigots where possible
  • Disconnect hoses
  • Insulate exposed lines where they cross open space

Old valves

If the shutoff valve under a sink or behind a toilet will not close, we replace it. It is a small cost compared with flooding a cabinet.

Fixture questions

Can you install a utility sink in my barn?

Yes, if there is water and a place for the drain to go. We look at the setup first.

Do you install fixtures I bought?

Yes. Bring them, or send the model number.

A good fixture job, start to finish

We begin by shutting off water to the fixture and checking that the shutoff holds. Then the old fixture comes out, and we look at what was behind it: the condition of the supply stubs, the drain, the wall or floor. If anything needs attention, we tell you before we install, not after.

The new fixture goes in level and tight. We use new supply lines, check each connection, and run the water for a good while with a dry paper towel under every joint. A drip that does not show in the first minute will show in ten. When it is dry, we clean up, and we leave you with any parts or paperwork the fixture came with.

What to have ready

  • The fixture, still in its box, so we can check the parts
  • The installation instructions, if you have them
  • Clear access to the cabinet or the wall
  • A note about any quirks, like a valve that sticks or a drain that gurgles

Country details

Houses out here sometimes have unusual fixtures: a deep farm sink, a utility sink in a mudroom, an outdoor sink for cleaning up after chores. Those are fine. They are just heavier, and they need good support and a drain that fits. If you have one in mind, send us a picture.

Practical questions from rural callers

What if my water has a lot of iron or sulfur?

Iron stains fixtures orange and sulfur gives water a rotten egg smell. A filter at the house is the real fix. We can install the plumbing for one, and replace fixtures that have been damaged by staining.

Is it worth fixing an old farmhouse sink instead of replacing it?

Often yes. Many old cast iron and porcelain sinks are worth keeping, and a new faucet and drain can bring one back to life.
